3 Things That Happen When You Do Absolutely Nothing (in Nature)

Time doing nothing, in nature, isn't a luxury. It's a necessity - one with real, science-backed benefits for your mental and physical wellbeing.
So while hustle culture’s off chasing its tail, here’s what’s actually happening when you stop chasing anything at all:
1. Your brain stops buffering
When you’re flipping between apps, tabs, emails and to-do lists, your brain’s executive control centre - the prefrontal cortex - is running the show. And it’s tired. Like, "why did I walk into this room" tired.
Attention Restoration Theory (Kaplan & Kaplan, 1989) suggests that time in nature gives this part of the brain a break. Unlike cities, which bombard you with stimuli (sirens, signage, Slack), nature is what researchers call "softly fascinating"—it captures your attention without demanding it.
Studies using fMRI scans show that after a walk in a natural environment, participants had reduced activity in the subgenual prefrontal cortex, a part of the brain associated with rumination and overthinking (Bratman et al., 2015). Basically, you stop looping on the bad stuff and start processing like a human again.
2. You breathe like a person, not a panic attack
Spending time in nature doesn't just feel relaxing. It literally shifts your nervous system.
A 2021 meta-analysis published in Frontiers in Psychology found that time in green spaces significantly reduced cortisol levels, heart rate, and systolic blood pressure. Another study (Park et al., 2010) compared people walking in a forest to those walking in a city and found significantly lower sympathetic nervous activity in the forest walkers.
What’s happening here? You’re shifting from fight-or-flight (sympathetic) to rest-and-digest (parasympathetic). Nature is one of the few things that speaks directly to your autonomic nervous system, whispering: "You're safe. You can exhale now."
3. Weirdly… ideas appear
When you’re no longer bombarded by inputs; notifications, deadlines, other people’s hot takes, your brain switches modes.
Enter: the Default Mode Network (DMN). This is a group of interconnected brain regions that activates when your mind is at rest, like when you’re daydreaming, walking without a destination, or staring at a tree wondering if moss has a favourite side.
Research shows the DMN plays a key role in self-reflection, creativity, memory consolidation, and future planning (Andrews-Hanna et al., 2010). That “aha” moment you had in the shower or while walking solo in the bush? That’s the DMN doing its thing.
Contrary to what hustle culture might say, doing nothing is often when the most valuable thinking happens.
Science calls it “restorative attention." We just call it Tuesday.
Put it into Practice
You don’t need to move to the woods or quit your job to give your brain the breather it craves. Try this instead:
Microdose nature: Walk without your phone. Even 15 minutes in a park can lower cortisol and shift your mood.
Stare at clouds, not screens: Let your mind wander. That blank space is where the Default Mode Network thrives.
Protect your nothing time: Book it in like a meeting. Block 30 minutes. Go outside. No inputs, no goals, just being.
