That tightness in your chest ain't normal

Nature cabins arrive in Perth

Sometimes you can't breathe. You're above water, safely on dry land, there's nothing obstructing your windpipe. And yet, this immediate crushing sensation arrives, punching from the inside out. You know what I'm talking about. This feeling is not unique. What's different is how and when it affects you. Strangely, it's often when there's not much else going on at all.

Popular fiction would have us believe that anxiety attacks are directly related to anxious events. Getting reamed with work that spills over onto the weekend. Having fights with your partner. Bill shock. Balancing five projects and a newborn. That sort of thing. The unsexy truth is our bodies are remarkably good at parsing stress. We use adrenalin to fight our way through tough situations. It's how we've survived for centuries. What they're slightly worse at is getting rid of the build-up, which is how you get to Thursday night on the couch, sitting in front of the TV and trying to clear your chest of something that isn't actually there.

Heading out to nature helps reduce cortisol, the chemical that causes this sensation. It's also a habit that, once you get into it, allows you the perspective and space to stop worrying about things that don't matter. To recalibrate your life so those Sunday afternoons where a woolly mammoth sits on your sternum become a distant memory, just like woolly mammoths. You know what this feels like. You could wait for it to happen again.

Or you could meet us out here.
