Behind the cabins designed to weather anything
At Unyoked, we’ve always believed that great things happen when you spend more time in nature. A little cabin in the woods does more than slow you down. It clears the noise, sharpens your thinking, and reminds you how good a simple cup of coffee tastes when you drink it under open skies.
But as simple as it feels when you unlock the door, there’s a lot of thought (and a fair bit of hard work) behind these little guys. They have to be strong enough to survive a storm on a mountain in North Wales, light enough to tow down a muddy farm track, and comfortable enough that you can properly switch off for a few days.
That’s where Henry Darkin and his team at Black Pines come in.They specialise in crafting off-grid cabins, saunas, and other small spaces that feel as good to be in as they are reliable behind the scenes. Since launching Unyoked in the UK, they’ve co-designed and built nearly 40 cabins, each one engineered to thrive off-grid while still feeling calm and uncluttered inside. We caught up with Henry to hear how he thinks about building spaces that disappear into the landscape but quietly work hard behind the scenes.
How did you get into building things?
My dad’s a builder, so I grew up in and around building projects. Our house was often a construction site, and I started working on site myself as a teenager. That early exposure got me interested in how things go together, so I went to university to study civil engineering, then went on to specialise in off-site modular construction.
What’s different about building a cabin compared to a house?
A cabin has to do more with less - and with Unyoked there’s the added challenge that it has to operate completely off-grid, in extremely harsh and changeable weather conditions. Building a regular home, you can lean on tried-and-tested methods that have been refined over decades. With these cabins, we’ve had to go through an iterative process of research, development, and innovation to create something that hasn’t really been done before in the UK. Everything is designed to be efficient, durable, and able to perform in the middle of nowhere.
What was the hardest part of adapting the cabins from Australia to the UK?
Working out how to make them feel just as good in a snowy field on Exmoor as they do in the Australian bush. We had to rethink how the cabins perform through cold, wet winters and long stretches with barely any sun. It was a proper learning curve, but together, we found ways to keep everything simple, warm, and off-grid, so you could get the same experience - stepping inside, shutting the door, and feeling instantly at home - no matter the season.
What’s a detail you obsess over that most people wouldn’t think about?
The spacing and setting-out of the panelling, cladding, and joinery - making sure all the lines line up perfectly so everything feels in the right place. It’s the kind of detail most people wouldn’t consciously notice, but you feel it. When it’s right, the space feels complete and harmonious. When it’s off, even slightly, there’s a subtle, jarring sense that something’s not quite right.
What’s your favourite moment in the build process?
That moment when the frame goes up - in just a few hours it goes from a stack of panels to a recognisable cabin. Then at the very end, standing back and watching it squeeze out the workshop doors and get taken off to its new home somewhere remote, ready to facilitate thousands of adventures.
