Deployment 33: Never Not Moving

Vera & Tibor, 2.5hrs West-ish of Sydney.

I've been exploring the world with Vera and Tibor for 25 years. The first expedition I took with them was in the late 1990s, when they were already close to 70 years old. When you are stupidly, foolishly young, as I was back then, you don't really understand what stamina means. It doesn't occur to you that other people might need to slow down, take a break, find an overpriced bottle of water in the searing August sun. The reason I still have low tolerance for this sort of behaviour - even my own - is because Tibor and Vera are now nudging their mid-90s and are still constantly on the move.

It seems only fitting that cabins positioned at the end of a rather spicy trek in a secluded location would be named for Tibor and Vera. These two are famous walkers. Tibor is so unflappable that he's scaled Mt Vesuvius twice without realising that he had a) an actual heart attack the first time and b) raging shingles the second. Vera once broke her arm in Germany and walked straight out of the hospital without waiting for the plaster to set. It takes a lot to impede their perennial forward motion, which is probably why they're so horrifically healthy all the time.

There's a lesson here somewhere, about seeking out new challenges or never getting stuck in one place for too long. Vera will indulge a conversation about it over a decaf cappuccino, but only for an allotted period of time before Tibor swings by and they're on the move again. The people that sit at their age rarely get up. They decided long before I was born that this wouldn't be their fate. They'd prefer to amble up hills or find new outlooks every time. Unyoked 'til the end, these two. As Tibor always says before we embark on the next journey: 'make sure you're wearing comfortable shoes.'
