Deployment 24: The most bearable lightness of being
Anant, 2hr NE Melbourne.
There's so much you need in the city. Every time you leave the house, it's keys, wallet, phone, headphones, handbag, sunglasses, just this veritable ton of stuff for the simple act of going for a walk. It wasn't like this when you were growing up. Mum or Dad would open the door and you'd be off like a rocket, not even worrying if your light-up shoes were velcro'd tight, let alone having to carry anything. We lost that along the way, didn't we? That 'get-up-and-go'-ness. That's part of what we love about being out in nature, not just for a spell, but for a session: empty pockets.
That lightness isn't the only thing you notice when you're surrounded by trees older than your great-great-great-great-great-grandmother, but it's a big chunk of it. It's a feeling like something weighty has dissipated after many months of labouring, that you can finally relax, if only for a few precious moments. But it's also the ability to rise above the bullshit, to see clearly. Resetting is easy to do on a device, but far more difficult on one's own mind. Believe us, we know. It took us five whole years to get to this point.
We're not saying forget your keys. That will be awkward when you get home and you're too old to be shimmying up a drainpipe. But what we are saying is forget that you need them. The majesty of nature makes everyone a kid again, light, free and relishing the chance to fall over in the mud. It's the most bearable lightness your being will ever experience. Relish it.
